Project overview

Sand technologies is an IT consultancy that specialises in providing AI enterprise solutions that harness the power of data and AI to solve real business problems and pressing problems around the world.

Sand offers technical AI solutions in the telecom, utilities, healthcare and insurance industries.
Global enterprises and forward-looking governments trust Sand Technologies to provide the resources they need to close the gap between their current reality and digital future. This product is an LMS that utilises AI to recommend learning material, it also connects people to like minded communities that help facilitate learning.

I was the sole UX/UI Lead on the project. I built a team of UI designers and UX researchers that included a mix of permanent staff and contractors. I introduced design thinking to the business, established a user centred design process and lead the production of a design system. There was a discovery phase that included stakeholder interviews, user interviews, competitor reviews, Information architecture workshops, personas, co-designed prototypes and user testing and evaluation. This was the first product that used that design system.

In my recent role at Sand, I got to visit many Countries across Africa whilst attending leadership retreats. I made sure I conducted lots of user research whilst I was out there and got to spend a lot of time with students who were using our LMS. I implemented an end to end design process, shaped the product vision, drove innovation and had a significant impact on the company’s success. I have helped research, define and build both the application portal, LMS and back office system that has enabled hundreds of thousands of students across Africa to get cutting edge tech training in data analytics, AI, Web development, AWS Cloud computing and Data science.

I was instrumental in winning a partnership with AWS. I prepared two prototypes and an engaging user story to present to AWS. They were very impressed and partnered with us. I helped Mentor many designers and a software engineer in Nairobi who completed one of our courses and helped him prepare for an interview with Amazon. He got a Job with them in London. I’m still in touch with many of the people I mentored over the years.
